35 albums you should be looking forward to in 2019

This is going to be a pretty good year (in terms of music, anyway).

1. The 1975 – ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’

Release is set for 1st of June, but subject to change. According to the band’s manager, we should expect a ‘nighttime record’, which could mean many things, tbh. The first single from this album will be released as soon as February.

2. Adele – TBA

As refined and sophisticated as you might believe your music taste is, there’s a good chance that you can’t help but love a sad Adele tune and a glass of wine. Well, according to rumours, you’ll have one just in time for Christmas 2019.

3. American Football – ‘American Football’

Emos assemble, American Football’s third album will be released on the 20 year anniversary of their 1999 debut and will similarly be self-titled. Set for release on March 22nd.

4. Ariana Grande – ‘Thank U, Next’

Ariana Grande’s ‘thank u, next’ attitude extends to her body of work too, because just off the back of Sweetener, she’s finishing up an album named after her iconic breakup single, which we can expect in early 2019, according to an interview Grande gave in her Billboard cover story.

5. Avril Lavigne – TBA

Last year, Avril Lavigne told the world that her sixth album is on the way and that it ‘holds nothing back’. We have no idea when it’s coming or what it’s called, though. There’s a small possibility that she could be about to make a proper comeback, but we’ll see.

6. Azealia Banks – Fantasea II: The Second Wave

Regardless of whether or not you’re an Azealia Banks fan, you should be following her on Instagram because she always has the funniest and most absurd celebrity goss, which she recounts from her own, highly entertaining perspective in between advertisements for her new soap brand. Yeah, that’s what she’s up to in 2019. Anyway, she’s releasing a follow-up to Fantasea at some stage this year, which will probably contain a banger or two.

7. Billie Eilish – TBA

It’s really hard to believe that Billie Eilish doesn’t even have a full-length album out yet, considering her incredible popularity with fans of all ages. It’s even harder to believe that she’s only just gone 17, because the teen pop-star has achieved so much in just a few short years. Earlier this month, she announced on Instagram that she’s mastering her new album, and although it’s not released yet – we’re convinced this will be one of the biggest albums of the year.

8. Bring Me The Horizon – ‘amo’

BMTH have come a long, long way since their early work, and if you haven’t checked out anything they’ve recently done, you should get around to it. Possibly the best glow-up of the 2009/2019 challenge. This album’s set to release on the 25th of January.

9. BTS – TBA

It would be foolish to leave one of the world’s biggest boybands out of this list. K-pop stars BTS have a huge release coming this year, with plenty of mystery surrounding what it’s contents will be.

10. Carly Rae Jepsen – TBA

Gays assemble. Carly’s been hinting that a full-length release will arrive in 2019.

11. Chance the Rapper – TBA

Following the four new singles Chance released in July 2018, the rapper’s been very open about the fact he’s in the studio and working on a new project that we might hear in 2019.

12. Childish Gambino – TBA

ChildishGambinoVEVO / YouTube

There’s been rumours that this is going to be Childish Gambino’s last album, and there’s plenty of questions surrounding the release. Namely, will it feature This is America?  Or those tunes Glover released last summer? (Feels Like Summer and Summertime Magic) We’ll find out eventually.

13. The Cure – TBA

It’s been over ten years since The Cure have released new music, and ahead of their festival run this summer, they’re set to bring out a new album to play on tour.

14. Danny Brown – TBA

Danny Brown spends most of his free time on Twitch, but while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and Persona 5, he has dropped plenty of hints about an upcoming 2019 album.

15. Dua Lipa – TBA

Although Dua Lipa’s keeping her lips sealed on the contents of album number two, she told GQ that it’s going to be “a pop album that you’re going to be able to dance to, but a lot of the songs are sad – they’re about heartbreak and they’re about going through some emotional manipulation.” My very first thought upon reading this was “sounds kinda like Robyn”, so please, for the love of God, let this sound like a Robyn album.

16. Foals – ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost’

Foals / YouTube

Foals have announced that TWO albums are coming in 2019, released as Part 1 and Part 2 – and named after a lesson you learn in your first semester of college when you write an essay and naively think that it’ll save itself when you turn your laptop off.

17. Frank Ocean – TBA

If it were anybody else, we’d be completely sick of the flakiness and mystery shrouding every album this man brings out, but because it’s Frank Ocean we’re all just like “Oh, okay. Whenever you’re ready.” Many people, including Nialler9, thing that the fact Frank opened his Instagram to the public is highly indicative of some new music. Please let this be true.

18. Grimes – TBA

Grimes has basically been working on new music since Art Angels was released and has been publicly complaining about her record label and how difficult it is to get her next album off the ground. Towards the end of 2019, she released We Appreciate Power with HANA and although the backstory of the single is super controversial and has landed Grimes in a bit of hot water, the song itself was very promising. According to NME, Grimes told a fan that her next album will be ‘highly collaborative and most gloriously light’, so we are expecting plenty more collab bangers a la We Appreciate Power.

19. Hannah Diamond – ‘Reflections’

PC Music / YouTube

PC Music fans, assemble. Sorry – we’re probably not going to stop saying that. The first single from Hannah Diamond’s upcoming release True is already out and it came accompanied by a perfect Bebo-style lyrics video. That fact in itself is evidence enough that this is going to be a pretty solid album.

20. Hozier – Wasteland, Baby!

Fans weren’t completely satiated by Nina Cried Power, the four-track-long EP that Hozier released in September 2018, but luckily for them, Hozier’s North American tour (from March 10th to April 14th) will coincidence with the release of his next album.

21. Kanye West – ‘Yandhi’

If you are one of the few people still listening to Kanye West in 2019, he’s going to reward you with a new album.

22. King Princess – TBA

King Princess / YouTube

King Princess is EASILY going to become one of the biggest names in pop in 2019.

23. Lana Del Rey – ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell’

Lana has already given us a handful of the tunes from her upcoming album, so we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. On top of the songs we’ve heard (Venice Bitch, Mariners Apartment Complex, How to Disappear, and Hope is a Dangerous Thing…), we know that Lana’s also working on a song called Sylvia Plath with Machine Gun Kelly. How Lana Del Rey of her.

24. Liam Gallagher – TBA

Gallagher told NME he’s working on a heap of new anthems, which are going to be a bit more “up-tempo, a bit more in-yer-face and less apologetic”. Sounds like Liam, alright.

25. Little Simz – ‘Grey’

If you haven’t listened to British rapper Little Simz, get on that ASAP before she gets announced for all of this summer’s festivals. A very fresh voice in UK hip-hop, who no doubt has very big things ahead of her.

26. Mark Ronson – TBA

There’s a heap of collabs on Ronson’s new album with King Princess, Miley Cyrus, Lykke Li and The XX’s Romy Madley-Croft involved in the making of this album.

27. Miley Cyrus – TBA

There’s no release date or title for Miley’s seventh studio album yet, but we can expect it to sound like her recent Mark Ronson collab Nothing Breaks Like a Heart.

28. Rihanna – TBA

Rihanna’s been teasing new music for the longest time, but we might finally get to hear her new album (or two new albums, as rumours have been suggesting) at some point in 2019. Following the loose theme of ANTI, the new work’s going to feature a lot of dancehall, which sounds very, very promising.

29. Schoolboy Q – TBA

In 2018, Schoolboy Q told fans at a concert that he had been working on a new album but it was delayed following the news of Mac Miller’s death, with the rapper explaining, “I just don’t feel right putting out an album.” So, chances are, we’ll hear it this year instead.

30. Sky Ferreira – ‘Masochism’

Pitchfork / YouTube

Thanks to the fact that Everything Is Embarrassing was one of the greatest songs released in our lifetime, Sky Ferreira has managed to retain icon-status with her listeners, despite the fact that she has released very little music since her 2013 project Night Time, My Time.  On Instagram, she hinted that something new was coming very soon, so let’s hope it’s in the vein of Everything Is Embarrassing.

31. SOAK – ‘Grim Town’

SOAKVEVO / YouTube

Derry’s very own indie-folk sensation SOAK announced that her next album, Grim Town will be released on April 26th and it looks and sounds extremely promising.

32. Solange – TBA

Solange told the New York Times that she’s going to be releasing a very jazz-centred album with a lot of “electronic and hip-hop drum and bass because I want it to bang and make your trunk rattle” and although this is vague, it sounds like exactly what we want from a Solange album.

33. Stormzy – TBA

There’s no name attached to Stormzy’s next album yet, but there’s definitely something big coming in 2019 and apparently it won’t sound like Gang Signs & Prayer, at all.

34. Tame Impala – TBA

Tample Impala broke the news of their Coachella headliner with an Instagram post that read “New year. New shows. New sounds.” Naturally, this sent new album rumours into overdrive, with front-man Kevin Parker only adding fuel to flames by saying he’ll be very disappointed if the band don’t have any new music out by 2019. The clock is ticking, lads.

35. Vampire Weekend – ‘Mitsubishi Macchiato’

It’s been nearly six years since Vampire Weekend released an album, and judging by everything that Ezra Koenig has done in the interim, we expect that their next release will be pretty interesting.
